I am still adding music to iTunes. A recent entry, Take the Long Way Home, by Supertramp, got me thinking about all the depressing music I have. Would love to create an ultimate depressing song list. Music to really bring you down!
And by depressing, I'd like to stick to existentially depressing songs about promise unfulfilled...not merely love lost and so forth. So, while Phil Collins is always in a bad mood, it's usually about unobtainable or unforgiving, or unreprentant women (his casual misogyny is good stuff for another post!). My criteria would also necessarily exempt a lot of What Billy Joel has written, depressing as it is (the exception being Piano man).
In essence: expressions of regret for roads NOT taken. So, no "I hung my head" by Sting about an accidental murder. Then there's issue of a song's real meaning. Does Daniel count? I think it may.
So, here's my prelminary list. Please add your own entres!
Take the Long Way Home - Supertramp
Dreams Go By - Harry Chapin
The Boxer - Paul Simon
Daniel - Bernie Taupin/Elton John
Piano Man - Billy Joel
Come Down in Time - Bernie Taupin/Elton John
Careless Whispers - George Michael/Wham
