I should follow the news more...

I was saying today to a colleague that, amazingly, Boris Johnson had managed to stay gaffe-free since being elected.

Not as in policies - his "no open alcohol containers on public transport" is an effectively illegal, unworkable policy at this moment. But that's to be expected from Boris.

No, I meant he's not said anything dumb.

Nobody has been offended by him yet.

My colleague also wondered at this. And I mean "wondered". As in, we could stick a big sign outside City Hall that says "It has been N days since Boris offended a region, class of worker or cultural group" and people would now look at the figure N and declare it the Eighth Wonder of the World.

I could take a picture of it. In future times, people would look at it and say "Look! Double figures! Isn't that AMAZING?!?"

I posited that his handlers might have gagged him, bound him, and locked him in the basement. I couldn't think of any other explanation.

Then another colleague mentioned he went on holiday three weeks after winning.

Well, it's still double figures without a gaffe. And I prefer my explanation. Perhaps they let him out for the holiday.

Still, the open alcohol containers ban will be instructive. We'll see how his handlers want to play...
