My Right to Privacy -- Teenagers Beware

Apr 24, 2006 09:00

How much privacy do your parents afford you? Do your parents respect your need for your own life? Or is it a constant and neverending battle? Do they always need to know where you are, who you're with, what time you'll be home, who'll be driving...

Well, believe it or not, things may have just gotten a little worse.

Sprint Nextel has just introduced the "Sprint Family Locator" program. This service allows your parents to track you through your cellphone.

When your parent requests your location, Sprint Family Locator uses GPS technology to pinpoint your location and display it on an interactive map, along with the street address and surrounding landmarks, on your parent's phone or PC. Once you're located, your parent can immediately call or send you a text message. Your parent can now also set alerts to notify them when you arrive at a specified location, such as school, a friend's house or the mall. For example, your parents can make it so be they'll be notified whether you've arrived at school by 8:15 a.m. each day.

"Sprint Family Locator is a valuable tool that can help parents and guardians have a better sense of their children's whereabouts when they're apart," said Danny Bowman, Vice President of Product Marketing for Sprint. "This is the latest Sprint innovation that uses GPS technology to improve the way families connect, communicate and locate one another."

Really? This is an improvement? Or is this just another way for your parents to tell you that they don't trust you?
