A Signing at the Smithsonian!

It's more than pretty chill that I get to write books for a living.  I realize how fortunate I am, and I "appreciate the now" when I get to participate in some pretty amazing events and signings.

Well, this past weekend, I had one of those Top Ten events.  I had a book signing for my new picture book, The Hallelujah Flight, at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

What a museum!  There are literally hundreds of aircraft, some suspended from the ceiling and some mounted to the walls.  It's home to a Concorde, the Enola Gay and the Space Shuttle Enterprise.  You can go up in the control tower and eavesdrop in on the goings-on at nearby Dulles or ride in all kinds of flight simulators.

Doing a book signing there rocks because everyone has to walk past where they put the tables (kinda like in Disney World where you have to exit the rides through the gift shops).  Almost everyone is there with kids, and almost everyone there is looking to bring home a souvenir.  Grandparents taking around the grand kids are the best targets customers.

The signing was also extra special because I finally got to meet the illustrator of my book, John Holyfield.  Yep, up until this weekend, we'd never met.  We'd never event spoken on the phone!

My cousins showed up -- so cool seeing Zach Alexa, and meeting Jason for the first time.  And Anna's friends stopped by, too.  Of course, we had to take some silly pics!

At the end of the afternoon, we got to meet one of the Tuskegee Airmen.  He was sitting at the table beside us, signing his book.  A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Hallelujah!
