Middle Eastern Drum Classes
The workshop focuses on the Doumbek, also known as Darbuka or Egyptian Tabla. People who are interested in learning
the Riq (Middle Eastern Tambourine) or other Middle Eastern drums are also welcome. For beginner and intermediate
levels.
Topics covered in the workshop:
• Basic playing techniques of the doumbek.
• Exercises to develop precise timing and sharp sounds.
• Middle Eastern rhythms from Egypt and Turkey.
• Combinations of rhythms.
• Ideas for belly dance accompaniment.
• Simple explanation of odd time signatures (e.g. 7/8 and 9/8).
About the teacher:
Born in Germany to Turkish and Syrian parents, Nezih Antakli was introduced from an early age to the fascinating tradition
of Middle Eastern culture and music. For several years, he performed with various groups in Germany. In search for a
deeper and broader knowledge of music, he studied percussion at the World Music Department of the Conservatory for
Music and Dance in Rotterdam/Netherlands and graduated in 2004. On several study trips to Istanbul, Nezih studied with
Turkish percussionists Ismail Peshluk, Hamdi Akatay and Alpay Dinletir. Furthermore, he studied with Egyptian master
percussionist Hossam Ramzy, as well as with frame drum legend Glen Velez.In October 2007, Nezih moved to
Philadelphia/USA, where he works as a percussion instructor and performing artist. His experience as a musician has
given him the opportunity to tour and perform in major festivals and venues around the world, including performances
throughout Europe, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey and the USA.
In addition, he is a certificated guest teacher for Middle Eastern percussion at the Escuela Superior de Musica in Mexico
City. Since May 2008 Nezih is performing and touring with the Brooklyn based Middle Eastern fusion project "Raquy and
the Cavemen". He plays and teaches doumbek, frame drum, riq and davul, among other instruments.
