“Did something change about Susan?” Ernie asked after one of his rare moments of quite thought. More often than not Ernie tended to espouse upon whatever thought entered his head while he made decisions, but every now and then an idea might strike him that required silence from him and the opinion or logic of a friend.

Hannah peered at him over her Potions text. Ernie had seemed to be in a mood since arriving at school yesterday for the start of their fifth year. Normally he arrived at school with a calm intensity, but yesterday she’d caught him staring curiously at Susan as if he wasn’t quite sure what to make of her. He’d spent the rest of the day looking over at Susan and then writing in the notebook he’d had since first year, an “Ideas and Observations Journal” he’d called it when first teased about it by Wayne Hopkins.

“No, why?”

“She’s very different now. Sunnier…” he trailed off.

“Do you mean happier, Ernie?”

“No, she’s just more…” he paused in thought. “Perhaps more noticeable? I think that’s better. I just…she’s more noticeable, Hannah. Maybe its her look. Her hair is longer and her eyes are-" Ernie paused as he heard Hannah begin to laugh uproariously. She occasionally read while he talked, so he was surprised to see that her attention seemed to be completely focused on him and still she continued to laugh. "What's so funny, Hannah? Is it something you know about Susan? Did she change something about herself?" he asked, more out of curiosity than anger.

"Not a thing, Ernie," she said as she tried to catch her breath.

"Then what's different?"

Hannah let out a friendly sigh of exasperation. "You, Ernie. You're the one who's changed."

"How?"

"Oh, think about it, Ernie," Hannah said with a coy grin. "I've got a chapter to read."
