It had been Penny’s parents’ idea to show Sheldon Penny’s old Junior Rodeo video recordings.  Penny knew from past experience that Sheldon was going to see these videos one way or another and had agreed that after dinner they would sit down and watch them.  What had surprised her was that Sheldon actually seemed interested.

“Now this is the barrel race event, correct?” Sheldon asked after taking a bite of his chocolate ice cream with absolutely nothing else in it, per his specifications. No nuts, no bits of chocolate or cookie, no ribbons of caramel or peanut butter, just ice cream.

“Yes,” Penny’s mother said with a delighted smile.

“This is actually a rather difficult event.  The rider must be in perfect sync with the horse and have also memorized a rather complex pattern while being able to adjust for any unknowns such as the quality of the arena surface, misplaced barrels-“ A sharp jab from Penny cut Sheldon off.  “How long did Penny train before competing?”

She saw her parents looking at one another as they tried to hazard a guess, but she was the one who answered.  “Six months.”

“Oh, a rodeo prodigy,” Sheldon said with a hint of pride as Penny’s event time was spoken in the video.  “When did you stop performing?”

“Two years after this video.  That was when the Stevens boy started saying she smelled like a horse,” her mother replied.

“That was not why I quit, Mom,” Penny lied.

“Hmph,” her father retorted. “She started dating the Stevens boy three days later.”

“I was fifteen, Dad!”

“Got her heart broke a week later,” her mom added.  “Found him kissing some girl at the next rodeo.  He never did quite walk right after what Penny did to him though.”

Penny couldn’t help but grin just a little as she felt Sheldon tense up beside her.
