Cindy left for Salt Lake City this morning and is probably flying there right now. It was a fun-filled (and slightly stressful for lack of homework) time. Cindy came out Wednesday evening and I met her out at the Ashby station in Berkeley so we could go to a vegan Pizza Place. We were so close to Lou, but it was late and we hadn't made plans to visit. We had the vegan version of a meat lover's pizza and it was DELICIOUS!
The next day, Cindy's actual birthday, I unfortunately had to go to class. I spent the morning finishing some homework, which was a pirate kid character design... and then went to class. Cindy spent the day making her own birthday dinner and retrieving her Maggie Mudd's ice cream birthday cake. I felt lucky to be able to share her birthday time that she prepared mostly for herself. I wanted to make her feel more special but school has flattened my social sensibilities and planning thinking. She made vegan shepherd's pie from the Veganomicon that we got for Christmas a couple years ago. It was amazing even though she didn't get all of the ingredients the recipe requested. Stocking up on special cooking supplies seems silly when we don't cook that much, and some of the spices and whatnot are expensive. On my way home from school I got Cindy a rose and scarf. Dinner was nice and enjoyable and thirty candles make quite a blazing inferno. We played an epic game of Scrabble and I won! We had some sweet words like 'broads'.
I started stressing about school somewhat and Cindy supported me in getting up early and going to school for the morning. I did and actually did some work! Of which I need to go do some now... but I will finish logging this weekend.
After I came home from school we headed down to San Jose to check out the Winchester Mystery House. It was the special flashlight tour, and we got to keep the flashlights, woohoo! It was very interesting and just mildly spooky. The house is pretty amazing, but it is so tourist-ized that some of the mystery is lost in the packaging that encompasses it now. The tour was kind of fast, so each room we would hang out and listen to the tour guide for a few minutes, then move on to the next one. There are so many little interesting things that it would be great to leisurely stroll through to really drink in the idiosyncrasies of the place. There was a caricature artist doing complementary drawings thanks to the mystery house, but Cindy and I had to leave to catch our train back to San Francisco. We were kind of bummed about that so we did caricatures of each other on the train. They turned out pretty swell.
We spent a lot of Saturday lazing about at home. We went to lunch at a Thai place nearby that has palm juice. I had some for the first time a little while ago because my friend Suraj told me I had to. He was right. It is an amazing drink and will just make you happy. The food is pretty good, but Cindy's dish ended up being spicy even though the menu didn't have the spicy symbol by it. Mine wasn't spicy so we traded.
After that we didn't have much planned, but I had wanted to take Cindy to Grand View Park out in Sunset to witness the grand view. We went and lucky for us the train tracks were under construction so we had to take a bus through the Haight where we say a hot cocoa bar. It wasn't really a bar, but the hot pudding we had was super chocolaty delicious. I needed to watch Dune for the upcoming Man vs. Pumpkin with the McAllister film production team, so we rented it and watched it. It is a pretty amazing movie, but I imagine the book is more amazing. Afterwards Cindy was super tired and we passed out. Today she left and won't be coming back here until we both do probably mid-January.
I will be going home for Thanksgiving and then at the end of the semester on the 17th or 18th of December. Then I get about six weeks off. Wow. Hopefully with that time I can figure out what I'm doing with my life.
So today I met a nice inebriated man at the laundromat. I was writing and he asked me if I was a writer. I told him I was just writing some personal stuff. He then proceeded to show me that he could write and also wrote down some story math problems and mumbled some stuff. By the end of our interaction he asked for a dollar for some beer. He was super nice and I imagine he gets a lot of alcohol by sharing is 'engineering knowledge' with people doing their laundry.
Awesome.
Time for school!
