You hit upon a key area though that I want to point out. Equal rights for same sex couples. Most, if not all, of the privileges and advantages that exist for married couples in California are already available to same sex couples. By law. So, equal rights already exist. What really comes into play is the ability of the majority of citizens to determine the value system by which they consent to be governed. Another point is that the definition of marriage that we put into the constitution is not a new one; rather is a definition that is thousands of years old and practiced by all cultures. It represents not only the natural law but the basic, stable building block of any society, the family: father, mother and children. Lastly, we must also necessarily look at the source of any rights. Do we just arbitrarily choose to make something a right or do we recognize, as the framers of our constitution did, that rights stem directly from an objective value system revealed to man by our Creator, God.
