*Alchemy- (1) A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the dicovery of panacea, and the preperation of the elixir of longevity.
(2)A seemingly magical power or process of transmuting.
ex. "He woundered by what alchemy it was changed, so what sickend him one hour, maddend him with hunger the next" (Marjorie K. Rawlings).
*philosophy- investigation of nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.
*transmutation- the act of transforming
*panacea- A remedy for all diseases, evils, or difficulties; a cure for all
*elixir- A substance believed to maintain life indefinitely. also called elixir of life.
*empirical- Relying on or derived from observation or experiment
