AND WHILE I'M COMPLAINING

So, I've been trawling through the Pit. And every time I visit it, it gets worse. IT'S LIKE A NEVERENDING CYCLE OF BADNESS THAT JUST GETS WORSE AND WORSE ALWAYS, AND NEVER ANY BETTER. I mean, I've read some truly amazing things on FF.net, so it's not that they don't exist; they just don't exist enough. And never in the places I want them to ( Read more... )

Ugh. I was just thinking over something similar last night! It bothers me SO MUCH when fans will include holidays, religions, traditions, foods etc. in their art and fic that are non-existent in the world of the story! DX Ughhhh.
Seriously, it is sad that people can get so much of Chinese culture wrong, as well. ARghksdf RAAAAAAGE.

Well, not that I don't agree with you, but in some cases the creators do this too, this injection of holidays/religious stuff etc. that they don't have in the world of the story. Over the years, for example, there has been a lot of official artwork for FMA with the characters dressed as Santa, Reindeer, with christmas trees, etc. Here and here, and I also feel like there was at least one cover with this theme, and there are also the characters in halloween costumes, etc.

It is kinda dumb, but fandom is about ~imagination~. If a fan wants to draw all their favorite characters celebrating hir birthday, why should the fact that some of those characters don't celebrate birthdays stop them? Just saying that sometimes it *is* excusable imo. I agree about respecting the cultures that these things are based on in fanworks, but just because something doesn't exist in the world of the story doesn't mean it can't be involved in fanworks at all ._.

Yes, I am well aware that the creators have also done some of this.
I... don't quite know. I suppose it's more of a personal thing - I'm just too much of a stickler for detail, sometimes. ^^;
I'm not saying it's bad for fans to celebrate, or include characters in said celebrations - it's just when it is meant to be taken in a serious context and it seems out of place?

That's kinda what I was trying to say. Like, a doodle of Ed wearing a pink santa clause outfit? Not irritating. A multi-chapter darkfic that centers on Roy Mustang like... dying when the AK47 he's flying crashes? Wat, no. It definitely depends on the context and the details, but yeah.
