“You knew, didn’t you!?” He shouted at her, jumping out and striding towards her. A large, bronze skinned boy jumped in front of her, but she muttered calmly to him in Spanish and he moved away reluctantly.

“Why didn’t you tell me? You just let him die! Who’s going to tell Elijah, huh? Who’s going to tell him that while he was trying to kill himself, the love of his life was wiped out by some fuckwit on a bike?” She looked neither worried nor surprised at these accusations, just sighed and touched Billy’s arm.

Strangely, his anger drained away as she did. “I am sorry. I knew nothing, of what would happen. I simply believe that nothing is over, until it is over. Neither are yet dead, but once it has been decided, that one will die, it will happen. And, before you ask me, I can do nothing.” Bill was angry once again.

“What are you talking about? Dom’s dead! I just told you!” He sounded desperate now, as she shook her head.

“No, no. Not yet. If you had not rushed away, your friends could have told you that.”

It was true; Dominic was being operated on even as Viggo broke the news to Billy. Talking to a doctor, he was told Dom had a fighting chance, but he could see it in his eyes that this was a lie.

“Please, please cut the crap.”

“He had a collapsed lung, splintered ribs, massive blood loss and both his legs were broken.” He really didn’t need to tell Billy that that meant Dom’s chances were slim. He walked away, anxious and unsure. If he gut was right, and this woman really was a reliable source of information, then only one of them was going to die. Billy could not help thinking that would be the lucky one; they were just so infatuated with each other, so totally attached.

They had all agreed not to tell Elijah until Dom came out of surgery and the doctors could give them a more accurate guess at the likelihood of Dom pulling through. And he wasn’t going to, Billy didn’t think he could do it. How do you tell a dying man that the only person keeping him going was gone?

So the three of the sat, strode, worried for the hours of Dom’s operation. The clock got slower and slower, mocking them.

It was three am before a nervous little nurse came into the room. All three jumped up simultaneously. This would decide. Which of his friends was going to die. Billy couldn’t bare it. He put his face in his hands.

“He’s going to be alright.”

And while Viggo and Orlando hugged and laughed and made hundreds of calls from the pay phone, Billy just stood, absolutely still, silent tears streaming down his face and soaking into his collar. For just a few moments, he had thought it could be okay. But it would never be okay. Not for Dom. Elijah would die and there was nothing anyone, not even this mysterious woman, could do to stop it.
