So anyway, this is actually a story originally written 2 years ago and only posted on lists and a few archives. This is its premier on livejournal, though I posted it to LJ privately a while back. (Last fall.) I just now got around to unlocking those entries...

This is a wonderful story -- I remember it vividly -- and the ending is perfect as written.

If you feel you must write an alternate ending, okay; but just be sure to make it an alternate and not a replacement for the original ending. Because this is in no way broken, and it does not need to be fixed.

Well, I agree with you. I knew from the beginning before I knew much at all what I would write how it would end. There was a writer named Boo who wrote the most beautiful stories that ended so unhappily that they were just heart wrenchingly painful. I wanted to capture just a tiny bit of that and hope that I originally did.

And the new bit will be added to the fic as an alternate ending, not a replacement - basically a "choose which chapter 10 you'd like to read" idea.

But it was during the hurricane Katrina donating that I promised emmasan I'd write the alternate ending in exchange for her donation. (Seriously, that girl is so patient...I don't even wnat to tell you how long she's been waiting.) So she deserves to have it!

Originally though I would have said no to such a request because I wanted the story to be what it was, but now that enough time has past, I don't feel that I'm tarnishing it by giving it a new way out...just giving it a bit of new life ;^)

This was an amazing story! I remember reading it about a year ago on an archive site and I absolutely loved it! Even though the ending depressed the hell out of me, lol. This alternate ending was great though. I'm glad you wrote it. It didn't ruin the story at all and it left me happy :)
