Tempted
Written for
lawyergirl who wanted Xander/Dawn and “temptation.”
This was really fun to write, even if it’s short. ;^) Symmetryfic is fun!
A/N: Takes place in season 7…yeah, you know…that one.
====================================
Dawn likes to watch him sit there, chewing on the nib of his pencil.
He hates books but he’s reading up on demons now because it’s important. He fights them for the same reason, even though he had no special powers - just determination and loyalty to the cause. Dawn thinks he’s a hero.
He talks to her when the others ignore her. He understands what it’s like not to be special, but to be around those who are. He knows how to laugh and be silly and how to be serious and understanding, saying just the right thing when she needs to hear it. Dawn thinks he’s a great friend.
He’s also pretty darn handsome with those brown eyes she can get lost in and the mop of hair that never quite falls the right way and that smile and that nice tight ass-not that she’d ever let him know she’d looked! She thinks of the times he’s touched her shoulder, of the times their hands have brushed. When he sits beside her she feels the heat through his jeans and can think of little else except to wonder if he’s noticing her as well. Does he know how much she loved it when he carried her tenderly after she broke her leg in a demon attack? Does he suspect it’s always his coat she borrows because she just wants to be wrapped in his smell? Dawn thinks she would like it if they were a little more than friends.
She doesn’t tell him…but she’s tempted.

Xander looks up from his reading just in time to see Dawn blush and look down.
She’s grown up so much, really. Xander admires her for the way she’s taken to the sword and the stake, fighting with the potentials as if she were one of them, even though she, like him, is only human. She’ll make a great Watcher someday with the way she’s taken to the books and languages. She’s even rather adept at spells. And, when danger calls, she’s proven she’ll use it all, fighting beside them, not as Buffy’s little sister, but as a warrior in her own right. Xander thinks she’s talented and brave.
A lot of the others in the house are busy now. Buffy’s sullen and intent on making everyone miserable; Willow’s either being a good Wicca or off being seduced by Kennedy; Anya’s a topic he’d rather not discuss; Faith is busy with either making the Potentials into Slayers or teaching them to party-Xander’s not sure which-and Giles is just plain gone most of the time. But Dawn still talks with him. She’s always willing to laugh at his jokes or go take a break from the house for some ice cream. But she can be serious too. He hadn’t realized how much he needed that…someone who took him seriously and who would listen and help him try to work things out that needed working out. Xander thinks she’s a great friend.
Spending all that time with her, he can’t help noticing other things too. Her figure shows curves now, and she knows how to dress to flatter herself. He notices her eyes light up when she’s happy, and she bites her lip when she’s sad. He notices the scent of her shampoo-something like apples-when she’s in the room and misses it when she leaves. He notices how delicate her hands look when she runs them along the page of some runic text in a language he can’t even recognize, much less read. When she’s excited her voice is full of passion and hope and when she’s serious, it’s intense and melodic. Would she find their ages so different? Would Buffy mind so much? Xander thinks he would like it if they were a little more than friends.
He doesn’t tell her…but he’s tempted.
