Today in my Diverse Worlds of Music class, these guest musicians came in to perform. They each played a different type of drum. This one guy played a drum from Ireland. But while he was playing, he did this thing that was soo weird and cool. He said the word "hurry" really slow, sort of fragmenting it into slightly different syllables, taking about 10 seconds to say it. Then he said it backwards, then forwards... so basically he was saying "hurrrrrrreeeerreeerrreee" going back and forth like that. But then if you listened, you could start to hear overtones. It sounded like someone was whistling, it was that loud. I mean, all he was doing was using his regular voice to say "eeerrrreeerrrreeee" and you heard this whistling sound. Then he had the class say it all together, and we produced the overtones too. Then later tonight I went to a concert that had all those same people performing in it, and there was a huge choir that did the overtone thing... it was so awesome because they started out singing this song which was really beautiful -- I think it was celtic or something, with a drone note in the background -- and it was so beautiful I felt like crying! LOL. Then it starts sounding minor and spooky, and all of a sudden they start singing "eerrreeerrrreee" and it was the overtones!! It sounded like a phaser effect. OMG I had goosebumps. It was so awesome.
Also, in case you didn't know, someone was murdered in my hall about 50 years ago. An RA was shot, and he put bloody handprints on a door somewhere inside the hall. The rumor says you can still see the handprints. I was skeptical. Well tonight I was hanging out with this girl down the hall named Rachel, and we got on the subject of the Reid murder, and she just nonchalantly goes, "Oh yeah, the handprints are on my door." I was like "OMG!!! WHAT??!?!?" so we went to look at her door. At first I just saw a bunch of dark smudges, then near the top there it was-- a dark handprint with a bloodstain dripping down from it. MAN it was so freaky. It is so obvious. I was expecting the handprint to be impossible to find. And what's weird is that I would always go to Rachel's room, knock on the door, and wait outside her door. I never even noticed the handprint before!!! Geesh......
