Another questionnaire? These turn up from time to time. They can be interesting, I suppose. Whether they're truly useful remains to be seen.

This is simply laying the groundwork for my study. But I'd be interested in seeing these other questionnaires. Have there been other studies done on City culture?

There have been, by at least half a dozen different people. Though they weren't generally thought of as studies on the City's culture.

What was their purpose then?

They weren't studies of the culture, strictly speaking. They were more like a census, and some I think were more for the police than for anyone trying to study the culture of the place.

And what do you mean by 'family' in your questionnaire?

I see.

I'm sorry, I should have made that more clear. I meant who are the members of your family that you spent a significant time growing up with. For example, did you grow up with your father and mother? Are you the youngest of three children or an only child? Were you raised by your grandmother? And so forth.

I see. You'll never get the whole answer on that one from me--

So why are you studying the culture of the City?

I'm an anthropologist. It's my job to study cultures.

Of course, normally I study ancient civilizations through artifacts and bones, but this City is unique in many ways.

The City is unique in a million ways. I think you'll never exhaust it in picking it apart.

I agree. It would take several lifetimes to get even a basic anthropological understanding of this place. It's very exciting.

Then I'll answer your questionnaire as a small start to it:

Basic Information
Name: Cain Hargreaves, Earl of Hargreaves
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Family: You wouldn't believe this, nor will I tell you-- I've one younger sister with whom I was recently reunited just before my arrival in the City. We lived together with Riff, my butler, and the rest of the household staff. As I'm not of age, my uncle Neil is still my guardian, strictly speaking, though he often enough leaves me to my own devices.

Previous Life

What is your "homeworld"? Would you describe it as preindustrial or industrialized? What language did you speak?

My 'homeworld' is Earth, the country of England, and the city of London, the year 1889. Given the factories and all the misery they cause-- on the far side of the river, I'd call it industrialized. Needless to say, we spoke English ( ... )
