The Eleventh Doctor

My general reaction to watching 5x01 - 5x03 all in a row...

While there were some things in these episodes that annoyed me (and I mostly focus on them below), I have to say that over all I liked Eleven. And I really like Amy. And I still think we should have skipped the specials and gone straight to this last year. Unfortunately though, I'm not sure I'm a fan of Moffat yet.

The problem for me is that as much as I enjoyed these episodes I found nothing really felt new. A lot of it felt to me like some combination of things cobbled together from prior New Who episodes/characters and Moffat shouting his credentials to the world.

The Aliens:
Patient Zero's base form - rather Jagrafess like no?
Atraxi ship - Racnoss ship plus CREEEPY eye

The Smilers - see also Autons and the Clockwork Droids

And we can't forget the Power Ranger Daleks - seriously can we go a season without them?

Amy (unfortunately):
Waiting for the Doctor/the Doctor being bad at timing - see also "Aliens of London", "The Girl in the Fireplace", "Partners in Crime" etc.
That thing she has to do tomorrow - "Runaway Bride"
Spunky, observant youngish woman with a sorta boyfriend who prefers excitement and adventure - see also Rose Tyler, etc

And that's not even counting the blatant call backs, shout outs, whatevers. I liked the moment at the end of 5x01 "The Eleventh Hour", the little clip sequence, but by the end of the first 3 episodes (particularly considering the preview for next week) it felt like Moffat was trying to cram a reference to the past into any and every available nook and cranny. That needs to chill out because to me it screams "Look, See, I know my Who. I promise not to break it."

One last gripe, Amy needs to stop being the Obvious!Meta Fairy.

I think what I'm trying to say is - I know this is a family show, but how about a little subtlety and originality Moffat. You're going to annoy the adults and still go over the kids' heads.
