Let us be thankful for the people we know

This weekend was likely one of the strangest tournaments I've ever been to. Granted, any Laser Quest tournament is going to be a strange gathering because it's like a gathering of nerds, but it's something I would not have missed.

It was so strange because it was like a collaboration of all the people I've met through the years while playing Laser Quest. It was playing the tournament with Rob, it was getting to see Mike, it was seeing the old Rochester guys, it was seeing guys play that you first started playing against, it was the realization that this is why we play Laser Quest. We play Laser Quest for the memories of the trip to the tournament, for the tournament itself, and for the people we meet and remember.

I am sore as all get out this morning, but it was so much fun. The teams that we played in finals weren't much better than one another, there was no team clearly better than the other, and we all played our hearts out to just try and win. I can't remember such a hard fought finals, one where everyone was playing clean, and doing everything within their power to will their team to victory.

Most tournaments aren't like that, but the ones that are become etched in your memories, something to fondly look back on and realize that this is why we play the game. It's silly to people on the outside looking in, but the camrederie and friendships that you develop make it all seem worthwhile. Sure, we lost, but we played our hearts out, all of us so weary from the beatings we gave our bodies, but it was worth it.

It was good to do something to remind ourselves of why we play, why we work so hard to acquaint a younger generation to something we have fallen in love with. I'm glad we played that tournament and I'm glad that I will continue to play.
