Relativity quiet day at work yesterday. Couple of calls out of 3's. Got to go to a very interesting training from KC Power and Light. They brought a demo trailer and hooked it up to 7200V primary service, then proceeded to demonstrate what happens when you contact an aluminum ladder to 7200V. Nice arcs. It was pretty cool the demoed several things, including the guts of a pad (or ground) transformer and what happens when one of the fuses on the power polls blows (it sounds very much like a gunshot BTW) The message is basically, leave that crap alone. One of the demo guys has a funny looking right hip, and I finally realized he had an artificial R leg. What I didn't notice was that his right arm was gone too. At the end he told us that as a journeyman line man he was working storm damage when he contacted a live high voltage line with his right elbow (lightening had struck a poll and caused a lighting arrestor farther down from where he was working to bridge between the line he was on, and a live line). The shot burned him badly enough that he lost his right leg above the hip, his right arm above the shoulder, and the finger on his left had where his wedding ring was. Honestly though, you wouldn't have noticed if you weren't looking closely. He survived against the odds and returned to a desk job at KCP&L. He got involved with the safety demos when the program started up, and was very knowledgeable. Other than being kinda chilly it was a useful demo.

Also got to judge the staff chili contest for the middle school across the street from 3's. That was actually pretty fun, and the principle who set it up was very appreciative of our time. Probably shot my sodium for the day. But in a good cause I suppose.

We were supposed to night train last night (that is training at night, not railroading at night, nor was it fortified wine) but impending icy weather pushed it back to tomorrow night.

Today how ever has started off badly, and I'm not looking forward to the remainder of the day simply because of stuff that I just have to deal with I guess. Sigh. I wana go back to work.
