that'd be me, my lil about to turn 7 (on tuesday) nephew from Ireland, and my brother (not his kid) from the UK.
So, i'm now concluding my brief 36hour stint in Ireland. had a helluva time trying to actually get here (cancelled trains/planes/driving) but i made it here saturday noon, and i've been at shannon airport since about 5AM. absolutely great! here's a few things i noticed about Ireland...
-the airport, although small offers free wireless.
-Sim cards are the shit- stop by a cell store, buy sim for 10 euros, comes with 10 euros...call local/int'l relatively cheaply, and when someone calls you, it doesn't cost a thing!! very helpful for getting around...or lost.
-Having GPS on the LAPtop and buying the european version of MS Streets and trips software means one doesn't get lost (much!). shame ireland is relatively crappy and the street maps aren't that great in detail/100% up to date.
-if something says it's 90ish miles away, back home, we assume it'd take a little over an hour...here that shit takes 3 hours! combo of no real motorways and traffic.
-I thought the British were friendly, but shit, the Irish are even better.
-Ireland is one of only two countries that does customs checks for the US at their airport.
-that being said, there's about 300 ppl waiting in the US Area for flight, and i'm one of the only civilians...i'm surrounded by US Army troops heading back!
-Driving on the left hand side isn't that bad...roundabouts are pretty fun
-Driving in fog sucks
-Having "super insurance" is great...if you ever need to book a car..look up argus car rentals...maaaad cheap.
-I confuse irish ppl moreso than normal ppl- they hate the english, love the americans and are ok with chinks. so i'm english, with an american accent/mannerisms, and i am chinese. wtf!?
-My brother's wife (the one who i saw) is a bitch. i f'n hate her guts and with they'd never wedded.
-There is absolutely nothing to do in shannon/Waterford area other than drink. bars close at 12.30, so you better find a house party or something (shouldn't be too hard considering the pop. is about the size nothing!
anyways, it's always great to get away, even if for a few hours...back to work when i get back to the US....(9.35AM flight from here, lands at 1pm newark)...sweet!
oh, and a final note...when going away for the weekend, there's no need to pack enough for a week
