Helena had been wandering through out the intertwining cities late at night, as she was prone to do when she was avoiding her "apartment" in the complex. She had just recently met some knew people, some who had inspired her to keep pushing on, giving her hope, and reasons to keep pushing forward even though she might end up doing it alone
( ... )
One minute he's watching a half pint 'Earth Bender' wrangle up some terrible lizards around the country side, the next he's back in New York, watching a half pint wrangle a terrible lizard... Wonderful.
He threw his hands up and turned away, heading back to some corner of the bar where he could get a stiff drink, and head back to his apartment to grab a shower, some food, and some sleep.
Passing by a young woman, he offered a small wave in greeting. "Hey."
Helena tilted her head to the side as the young man began to pass her. He looked... familiar?
He waved at her and said hello but she was sure it was just one of those "I'm passing you and so I won't be an arse and not say hi" kind of waves but she was sure she had seen him before.
"Hullo."
As he walked by she turned to the side a bit and called out, "Do I know you?". It was true Helena looked a bit different but she wasn't so different that anyone who had met in the past year wouldn't recognize her. Maybe she had a little less dirt on her face and her hair was a bit longer but she hadn't completely changed in the past year... had she?
The young man paused, turning back to the girl, examining her. "Maybe. Might have been a long time though." From the accent, she was European, and he'd been there, globetrotting, really.
"I've been around." Duo smirked a bit, "Then again, y'think by now all of us would know each other. I'm Duo."
Helena extended her hand. "I'm Helena. Helena Campbell. Nice to meet you... again, maybe." She smiled.
"You're right. You would think that we would all know each other, but, I mean, even though everyone technically lives here the world around the complex is huge... I've been here for a while and I've still only met about a handful of people."
She tilted her head in thought about. How strange. She needed to be more outgoing.
Duo shook it, trying to hide the exhaustion on his face.
"Again for the first time, how about?" Duo answered, retrieving his hand and shoving both into the pockets of his jacket. "It's the same for me, and I bet all of us, or maybe not. Everyone likes to stick to what they know in this kinda chaos. Least that's my theory any how."
"So, what, did they bring jolly ole England here?" Duo asked in the best (that is, worst) mock accent he could muster.
Helena nodded at the first remark. 'Again for the first time...' It made sense to her.
She took her hand back and went digging in her pockets for her orange gloves. She gently slipped them on while Duo spoke. She giggle a bit at his attempt to speak in a British accent but her smile began to fade.
"I don't really know. I haven't gone looking for it... I suppose a part of it is here, but I haven't seen it. I came directly from someplace else not England."
Quickly changing the subject she smiled a bit, "What about you? What did you bring with you?"
"Oh, just some Military school from a shady totalitarian organization that runs the world. I've pretty much dropped out." He dismissed it by waving a hand, chuckling. "I've still got to get over though and pick up a few things though. Gotta leave with a bang, you know?"
If she had known what he did, she'd probably realize how literally he was speaking.
"Anyway, it's no big. I'm probably better off being a pseudo prisoner her."
Her eyes widened a bit at the place he used to call home and she was relieved to hear that he wasn't apart of that anymore. It just sounded aweful. She looked down the hallway as he spoke keeping her eyes peeled for anyone else.
She averted her gaze from the hallway back to Dup as he finished. "You're probably right... I mean, this place isn't half as bad as the place I came from... Nothing compared to home, of course... but it could be much worse."
Compared to her vague memories, this place was a luxury hotel temporarily housing her on her on going journey to get back home.
Helena raised a brow at him. In anywhere else in the Universe that would sound like a come on. She supposed it made sense for people to say that more casually here than anywhere else, but it still made her feel edgy.
"My rooms are right there if you want to sit down." She pointed to a door three doors down the hallway on the right hand side.
"It's kind of a mess but it's close by." And her territory. That made her feel much more at ease in general.
A little abrupt? He couldn't hide his yawn now. "Sorry. Sorry, I'm really tired. Slept on the ground last night." Fair explaination. He gestured to lead on. "Thanks."
Helena couldn't stop the quircky grin from showing on her face. She didn't really have trust issues, it wasn't in her nature to distrust anyone, it always just caught her off guard how close and comfortable all the people her could become.
After a few seconds thought, she determined that it wasn't really a bad thing at all.
She walked past him and towards her door. When she got to it she opened it and stepped in, leaving the door open. She immediately ran over to the couch which had hundreds of papers piled on top of it. She took off the papers in large stacks and moved them to the kitchen counter. More papers were scattered all across the floor and as well, but were easy avoided with the correct footwork.
"Here ya go!" Helena motioned towards an empty spot on the couch. "I know it's not completely clean but it must be more comfortable than sleeping on the ground all night."
She smiled towards him. It was her way of saying, "Everything is okay and I'd love for you to join me for a while."
Duo had this other problem, he didn't have a problem trusting other people so much as he had a problem trusting the world around them. He knew he could trust OZ to be filthy scumbags, and his friends to be pretty damn golden hearted most of the time, but the world? God? Whatever it was? He couldn't trust that.
Duo nodded and shrugged a bit, mess? What mess? "It's only half as bad as my place." Note to self, go make sure the dog's okay.
He took the seat happily and plopped on down.
He smiled back, then looked around the room, especially taking note of the papers. "So, what's all this? You planning world domination or-" he picked up a piece of paper and looked at the images. "Or the next great Van Gogh?"
"Actually, rather, I'm trying to fix someone elses' world." Helena stated it matter of factly but knew how ridiculous it sounded. It didn't matter much though, it was the truth, and that's all she could tell.
Helena went into her fridge and grabbed a soda. "Would you like something to drink?"
