Doctor Who 6x08 (nonspoilery)

Nothing to say about the episode yet -- still processing. But I had always thought (and a quick Google confirms) that the expression "the penny drops" comes from penny arcades or other coin-operated mechanisms. It's a great metaphor: it takes a second, but -- ka-chunk -- realization dawns; the mechanism lights up and starts moving.

So what's up with "The penny's in the air" preceding "the penny drops"? Why would the penny be in the air? I've never heard that part of the expression before. Is it a British thing? Or is it just a mistake -- someone thinking it refers to a coin toss? Which, OK, that kind of arcade display isn't exactly part of daily life now. But flipping a coin doesn't make sense at all!

But because today is Thanksgiving, I'm mostly thankful to have such a lovely show to nitpick.
