After getting the shock of my life about ten minutes ago, I feel in desperate need of some pretty so cheer me up (although I'm not sure there's enough pretty in the world to make up for this). I had the caps more or less ready, so here goes. If you haven't seen All The Small Things (or Heart and Soul as it's apparently called in Australia), you might want to be a bit careful because this will almost certainly contain spoilers for future episodes.
So, here's our first glimpse of the mysterious man behind the veil.
In a world of his own, and oblivious at first to Esther's presence.
Interesting that he heard the music and came in to listen, just like Layla. I don't for one minute believe that Jake can't sing. What I can believe is that little brother would rather give up singing altogether than try to compete with big sister when big sister has such a massive and obvious talent.
This is such an odd way to introduce Jake because it feels completely out of character for him, the way he reacts to Esther, the way he speaks, just the very air of him. I'm choosing to believe that it's quite late at night - which it clearly is, this is the summer after all, and it's pitch black - and he's only just arrived in Glossop, it's been a long day and he's very tired.
Unpacking the car, late at night, but it's now at least a couple of weeks later. So Jake's moved into the area but he clearly hasn't started work yet, otherwise why would Reverend B introduce him at the end? Has he been somewhere? Why do we never see the car again? I get the very clear impression over the whole series that Jake travels everywhere by skateboard. Maybe his first appearance a few weeks ago was just Jake coming up to have a look around the town, look for somewhere to live, do the research that it's a good idea to do if possible before you move to a new place.
There's the first glimpse of the snowboarding. For what it's worth, that's not actually the board he uses in episodes four and six. At this point, I - like everyone else - was convinced this was Jake's ex stalking him. The scene before this is interesting - Layla unpacks and carefully sets out at least a dozen toy dogs on her bed. I thought there might be a reason for it, something in Layla we don't know yet, but it never gets mentioned or implied ever again. So what is it with Layla and the toy dogs?
He tells her to go, then walks away and shuts the door on her. Well done.
So our mysterious Jake skateboards.
Jake and Kyle's first meeting. Significant in that it brings Jake back into contact with Esther without gatecrashing any more private parties. Also in that people in the Caddicks' lives have to understand/accept/cope with Kyle and this is the first step to being friends with Esther - treating her son properly.
I just like the way he shrugs the hoodie back onto his shoulders.
His first, and probably last, meeting with Georgia. In fact, taking Jake as 28, which I do, for reasons I'll explain in ep 6, Jake's actually closer to Georgia's age than Esther's, and a love triangle between the three of them could have had potential.
Delivery duty done, Jake stands there looking completely awkward and unsure what to do with himself while the Caddicks' lives fall apart in front of his eyes.
Jake's first meeting with Ethel. It seems to be his first proper look around the church, which makes me wonder what on earth he's been doing for however many weeks he's been hanging around Glossop. Has he spent all day every day skateboarding or snowboarding? What else is lurking in Jake's life that we don't know about?
Ethel takes an instant dislike to Jake, apparently based on his clothes and probably his hair, because he remains totally calm and polite as she questions him, although he does seem quietly amused by her.
Enjoying All The Small Things. I think this is more about them bending the rules of the contest and getting half the audience on their feet than genuine enjoyment of the music. Of all the performances in this entire series, this is my least favourite, and that includes Kyle's version of Aliens Exist.
I don't know why this bit never struck me as odd before. I suppose it's because it's already been established that they know each other pretty well .
But would any ex-girlfriend go for the hair if you ended up wrestling? That's a total giveaway that they're brother and sister, because no one in the world pulls their friend/ex/colleague/acquaintance's hair. A total giveaway that just about no one picked up on at this stage.
Finally, we get a formal introduction. To us the audience, to the other characters and the revelation that he isn't some kind of friendly hoodie, he's the new curate - and Lulu did say earlier that Reverend B's going, prompting speculation on early retirement. Ethel also comments on how he tried to stir things up a bit but they soon put a stop to that, and it's clear that he's trying a slightly different tack, finding a second-in-command to do it for him.
I sort of like the idea of Reverend B being Jake's father. It's clearly not true but...
He's positively glowing. He's just started his new job, he's been introduced to a new set of friends and enemies, and he's in the church. I don't ever quite get the impression Jake is bursting with faith. I think there's more to it than just taking over from Daniel, because if you didn't have some spark of faith in you, I think you might have trouble with the training and ordination and all that, which I know nothing whatsoever about. I think it's about mending his soul. More on that in a few episodes' time.
