It's very easy when they are younger. When a movie comes out, go see it first to make sure that you want your kids to see it or not. Read a book before giving it to them. When they watch tv, watch it with them, or put in a cartoon. When you are driving in a car, and a song with questionable material comes on, you turn it off. Parents today are taking VERY little precautions because "I am too busy" or whatnot and they blame everyone else, but themselves and are not claiming the responsibility on raising their kids.
Now, when kids get older and the are away from home more and more, they have to make their own decisions on what they feel to be right or not. That is what growing up is all about. Hopefully, parents have instilled in their kids the values and such to make sure they keep what's bad away from them.
That is what I hate about censorship. HUCKLEBERRY FINN is a great book with a great message, and just because it has the "N" word in it (although that is how they talked back then), it is being banned left and right. People need to stop being so PC and look at the message and not the wording. Jim is treated with more humility and love that Huck's white father. But, people don't see that. All they see is the "N" word.
I am not arguing with you, but I like discussing things other than American Idol and crap like that, so this is fun. :-)
