I replied that it was an old fragrance and that I’d worn it a long time. She responded, “You smell like flowers. It’s nice.”
It is a fragrance that has been around for a very long time, Nina Ricci’s L’Air du Temps. It never quite had the cachè of Chanel No. 5, but I’ve been wearing it since the Reagan Administration, and, before that, I wore the cheap drugstore knockoff, Windsong, by Prince Matchabelli.
L’Air du Temps used to have pride of place at department store perfume counters, but it is so out of fashion now that you can buy it at Walgreens. And I do. 😉
I have dabbled briefly with other scents-Estee Lauder’s Intuition was the only other fragrance to come close, until I stopped being able to find it-but I always come back to L’Air du Temps. The fragrance still makes me happy, and it still prompts the occasional compliment.
I once read that the secret to French beauty was a good lipstick color and a signature fragrance. It made a big impression on me, and it’s been Revlon and Nina Ricci for me ever since. ❣️
