At 9 a.m., I went to a law office downtown to participate in a deposition. The deponent did not show, so I had some time to kill.
I stopped at Topps Barbecue on Summer and had pork barbecue for breakfast. Well, late breakfast, early lunch. Then I went to Bermel's and had my hair cut. Ann-Marie cut it, and she's the best. She cut it the last time I was killing time in Memphis, and I've been hoping that I could get back and have her cut it again. Plus, she's Dutch-American, and she has a really nifty accent and a wooden shoe at her station. :-)
At 11:30 a.m, I went to the local offices to hang out and wait on my client appointment at noon. However, my client arrived early, we met for less than an hour, and so I had some more time to kill.
I went looking for the Penzeys shop in Germantown. My foodie friends had been talking about it, and so I decided to see if I could find it, and I did. It was a great little store, and it smelled wonderful. I came home with a sack full of beautiful spices and herbs. I bought:
Ancho chili pepper
California sweet basil
Albanian rubbed sage
Indian tumeric root
Indonesian white pepper
Cayenne red pepper
Vietnamese extra fancy cinnamon
And I got a freebie! Since I bought tumeric, Deborah, the clerk, gave me a 1/4 cup jar of Bicentennial rub, which has tumeric (along with salt, pepper, orange peel, and coriander) in it. Apparently, it was a big day at Penzeys for tumeric sales, because the guy who checked out before me also bought tumeric and also got a free jar of Bicentennial rub. It had been the Thanksgiving freebie (it's a good rub for turkey), and there was quite a bit left, so Deborah was giving a jar to anyone who bought tumeric.
And you all know how much I love freebies. :-)
I'm beginning to regret not buying cumin and Mexican oregano. I could mix up my own chili spice mix, if I had them. I may place an order on-line, because Penzeys delivers very quickly.
