At
catemar 's place last weekend I realized I had neglected to introduce my new kitty - Abbey. My last post here mourned the loss of my 18 year old kitty Jasmine. I said I was going to wait at least two weeks for a new cat.
I lasted one.
I saw a black and white kitty on Petfinder and just knew she was mine. Something about her eyes just said she was the one. And when she just laid in my arms at the adoption event even when the foster mom said she didn't like being held, I knew I couldn't let her go. I 'adopted' her on May 23rd but since I would be staying at my parents' that night and spending most of the day at Olaf for my sister's graduation, I didn't pick her up until the following evening.
She is a medium hair, black and white kitty. She's only about a year old so she's a lot more active than Jasmine was. She's very friendly and she waits at the door for you when she hears someone coming up the stairs or putting a key into the lock. I'm working on behavior. She likes being on counters - this morning she nibbled on one of the muffins I made for breakfast! She is comfortable with dogs since her foster mom had one so if I decide to get a house and a dog in a few years then she should be okay with it.
I don't know exactly how old she is. The rescue organization, Last Hope, got her from a shelter up north in February and that is all they know. So in her life she has for sure lived in a shelter, two foster homes and now my place. Even a month later I'm still trying to just reassure Abbey that this is her home and she's not going anywhere.
She loves being on my deck. I have to stay out with her to make sure she doesn't jump off. I'm thinking of getting her a collar and leash that I can hook to the patio door so she can be out without me (and I can not have to sit out there as much when I have things to do).
The name Abbey is from 'The West Wing'. The President's wife's name is Abbey Bartlett so that is how I came up with it. Her name was Jordan but I wasn't overly fond of it and my roommate (
kawaidesu ) had a stalker named Jordan so changing it seemed best.
She was almost 12 pounds when I got her so she is on a diet. Abbey is not happy about that! She tries to knock her food off the top shelf of my closet since she can't reach. She'll wake me up at 4 AM wanting to be fed. And if she thinks you are going into my room she runs there so she can be waiting by her dish. A fat cat isn't bad though, especially after Jasmine basically stopped eating at the end. I just want her to be a healthy weight.
I still miss Jasmine a lot. And I still talk to her every so often (because I'm weird like that). But Abbey has been good for me. She makes me laugh, gives me something to take care of and gives that unconditional love that pets are good for. She even somehow convinced my parents to get their own cat! Now people just need to come and meet her!
