And so, it's time to get started on January's reading, now that we've run out of January.
Priceless: on knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing by Frank Ackerman and Lisa Heinzerling
One of those "anti-corporate", anti-market, "there's a better way to live than this" sort of books that's so hard to sum up. Cautiously recommended.
The Gypsy by Steven Brust and Megan Lindholm
Brust, as I believe I've mentioned before, is a hit-or-miss author for me, and unfortunately "total crap" wins out at about 55%. Megan Lindholm, as the cover of this book helpfully notes in teeny-tiny print, also writes as Robin Hobb, of whose works I have read exactly 1/2 book up until this one. I read this one as it seemed Urban Fantasy, and that's a sub-genre of particular interest to me.
Alas, it's confusing as hell. There's a gypsy, but he doesn't know who he is, what he wants, or why he's running from the cops. The cops don't know who he is or why they're arresting him, nor why or how he vanishes out of the jail (we don't know that one either). More characters are introduced, but who's doing what or why takes a long time to work out.
I can't say I hated it, but I certainly can't say I liked it. Not recommended, except for fans of these two authors.
