Please.
It's an incredibly versatile word. There's the verb, to please. To do something right, to make someone happy, to have them think for just a moment that you might be the sweetest thing in the world. And look at all the adjectives from the same root:  pleased, pleasing, pleasant. Contentment, a faintly hedonistic pleasure. I aim to please. May it please God.
On the other hand, though, one pleads, makes pleas, and oh God please. I have never wanted anything so much; I have never felt so powerless in getting it. You will refuse me, I know. I didn't know what else to do, though. I have sacrificed my pride and have nothing left but longing.
Please and thank you. What could be more polite and, at the same time, utterly assured of getting its way? I know what I'm doing and have all the confidence and the resources I need to do it. I'm well-bred and gracious enough, though, to pretend that I still need to ask your permission.
Bitch, please. I know how this goes. I've seen your shit before. I have better things to do than deal with you anymore.
Please.

What's your word?
