The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone This book is exactly what the fabulously creepy cover suggests. It's a book about attacking spiders. I am a sucker for disaster movies, and if you throw a monster or two in there, excellent. This book follows a couple different people as they navigate a world that experiencing SPIDER ATTACKS. Killer spiders guys. Basically hell on Earth for
sjounouchi. (Don't read this book, babe.)
Books like this aren't always good. Sometimes they fall victim to too much gore and not enough plot/character development. Surprisingly, the character development was really good in this! It followed several different people, from soldiers to survivalists, but they were cool characters who I actually cared about, and the action was fast paced and fun. And yes, there were lots and lots of killer spiders. It was also book 1, and left us on a cliffhanger, so I can't wait for book 2,
Skitter, to come out. I will definitely be reading this.
I believe I gave it 5 out of 5 gore-loving Ariels on Goodreads.
(You should probably be my friend on Goodreads, btw.)
___ Edge - Koji Suzuki I originally found this book because I did a search on "earthquakes". I was in the mood for a fun earthquake natural disaster book. This is so not that book. This book was an interesting read, but it dealt with philosophy and maths and science that was beyond my head, and I found myself on the same level of characters who were on the sidelines going "huh?"
The first couple chapters full of disappearing people were very interesting. When they settled into the main story, I was less interested, but I wanted to finish it because I wondered where it was going. It didn't go where I was expecting. This isn't a natural disaster book so much as it's a sciency end of the world type book. Not my style, but I did finish it. I gave it three slightly-disappointed-nothing-exploded-Ariels on GR. It wasn't a bad book. It was well written, and the concept was very interesting, but it went over my head, and it wasn't what I wanted.

It Happened One Autumn - Lisa Kleypas
I started my Lisa Kleypas kick with Cold-Hearted Rake, and while I liked the world and the side characters, I was spitting venom over the two main male characters becaue they were absolute assholes and frankly kind of rapey. But
elleykat recommended the Wallflower series by her, so I thought I'd give it another shot. The first book in the Wallflower series, Secrets of a Summer Night, was pretty good. This one I'm reading right now? I LOVE IT. I looooove it. The main male lead was introduced in the first book as kind of a gruff, taciturn grump, and I was worried I wouldn't like him, but he's funny and secretly sassy. The heorine is a total sassbutt, who takes no shit, and gives no fucks. They had a weird "I'm going to kiss you without permission, and keep kissing you" scene, which I was initially squicky about, but they have this love potion/aphrodisiac angle that helped a little that I am liking. I'm about half way through, and I basically want to blow off all my weekend plans to finish it, and the next one, Devil in Winter, which is supposed to be the the best of the series, is sitting in my purse as we speak waiting to get read.
That's all for this week's edition of "What I read this Week."
