“Sit still.”
“I am sitting still.” Sam whined as he fidgeted.
Dean stopped what he was doing and fixed Sam with a stare. “Sit more still.”
Sam rolled his eyes, but settled. “It hurts.”
“Good. Maybe next time you’ll pay more attention.” Dean made a face and reached for the antiseptic. “I don’t think it needs stitches.”
Sam winced away from the cotton ball even before Dean got close with it. “Baby.”
“Asshole.” Sam responded.
“Nice. Don’t let Dad hear that mouth.”
Dean leaned in close and wiped the antiseptic soaked cotton over the gash on Sam’s jaw line. An inch higher and Sam would have a permanently widened smile. An inch lower and Dean would be digging his brother’s grave, not patching him up.
It didn’t need stitches, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t serious.
“Let it dry and I’ll bandage it up.”
“What about you?” Dean turned to the mirror and looked at his bruising cheek. “I’ll be fine.”
“Dean?”
Dean looked back at Sam and nodded. It didn’t need to be said. Dean knew Sam was sorry for missing. Sam knew Dean was sorry he didn’t get there in time. “Yeah, Sam. I know.”
He turned Sam’s face and nodded. “You’re going to end up with a scar.”
Sam grinned. “You think so?” He twisted to look in the mirror and Dean had to pull his face back.
“Sit still.”
