Henceforth, any Kool-Aid-swilling would-be evangelist who tries to tell me that Apple products "just work" will be jeered and mocked until my throat is sore ( Read more... )

So you're saying, buy a droid.

You bought an iPod. Your opinion is automatically invalid.

Wow, a whole 32 gigs of Flash, that's almost enough for half my collection. And there's a reason I bought a music player instead of a phone that plays music.

32 gigs of Flash in the player. Plus a SDHC slot for as much more as you want. Rendered upgrades rather irrelevant. SD just keeps coming down in price, and the case for my player has pockets for a couple of cards. I do have to swap every once in a while, but it's not often I want to shuffle the Stones and Rossini, so a dedicated card for full-length opera works out ok.

I've got an iPod, but I never used iTunes--the user interface is confusing and difficult to use. I went with something called Anapod Explorer that just works like Windows Explorer--the iPod just looks like the external storage device that it is, and I can copy files there like I would to any other drive.

I've strayed away from the iPod, and recent hardware releases seem to underscore my decision. They had a really nice clean interface, but now they've screwed the pooch on the nanos and other small ones. Also, a vid screen on something 2"x2"? Really? And on a related note, anybody that buys an iPad needs a kick in the pants, it isn't useful for anything but e-reading, IMHO, and there are much cheaper appliances out there for that.

I jumped on the Android platform for my phone, and it is good. Not great, but good. If I could get longer battery life, I'd be much happier, but overall the thing scores high for overall usefulness.

Oh, I'm not ambivalent about the Droid, I thoroughly appreciate it and am glad I own one. It is endlessly useful in my personal and professional life. I just wish the battery didn't run out so fast, and that is really my only enduring critique. To be clear, I rarely use it as any sort of music player, so for me, comparing it to any Apple device of similar ilk should take that into consideration.

I'm about to order an extended life battery for it and I've just switched the power management scheme to battery saver. I've also just now overridden the screen brightness from "auto" to the lowest setting. I believe these steps may reconcile my one big gripe. I'll report back in a week or two.

Apple software is the buggiest shit in the world. iTunes and Safari are disastrously awful.
