The ESA is having a
contest, and is asking for playlists of music that would be suitable for astronauts on the ISS to listen to.
They limit you to 10 songs, although I guess there's no reason you couldn't make multiple submissions. I went with:
"Munich Air Disaster 1958" - Morrisey
"Thirty-Five Thousand Feet of Despair" - Flaming Lips
"Rammstein" - Rammstein
"I Don't Want to Die in an Air Disaster" - Albert Hammond
"Going Down" - A
"Plane Wreck at Los Gatos" - The Byrds
"At This Velocity" - Thursday
"January 28 1986" - The Tape Eaters
"Plane Crash" - Rilo Kiley
"Balloon Burning" - Pretty Things
I did *not* include "Space Oddity," "Major Tom," or "The Final Countdown," because they're fucking *obvious*.
Other candidates:
"Fire and Rain" - James Taylor
"The Sinking of the Reuben James" - Woodie Guthrie
"99 Luftballoons" - Nena
"Wreck of the Old 97" - Traditional. Patrick Sky would probably be the most appropriate rendition.
"Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel" - Barenaked Ladies
"Down Among the Dead Men" - Flash and the Pan
"Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" - Gordon Lightfoot
"Flyingdale Flier" - Jethro Tull
"Apogee" - Jethro Tull
"Wish You Were Here" - Mark Wills
"Shut Up and Get On the Plane" - Drive-by Truckers
"The Wreck of the Fairchild" - Thomas Dolby
"Sending Postcards from a Plane Crash" - Fallout Boy
