COME ALONG TO THIS MOVIE LIKE SONMI-451 TAKES HAE-JOO'S HAND
Okay, so I saw Cloud Atlas this weekend with my roommate and friend! I really enjoyed it BUT to be fair, I had only the IMDB page of knowledge going in and had not read the book. I heard the book is WAYYYYY different than the movie and you might not like the different and watered down themes for the movie in order to fit an actual movie time. It probably would have been awesome as a miniseries since it would be better to focus on the overarching themes. I was extremely disappointed in the prosthetics for the white guys who were "Asian" in Neo Seoul. Basically, there's been a backlash with yellowface and the extent that they could not hire an Asian American actor for the role of at least Hae-Joo Chang especially when the prosthetics were not at the level as transforming a colored person into a white person (see Halle Berry's Jewish lady and Doona Bae's freckled wife).
ANYWAYS, I was extremely disappointed in lack of fanworks for this movie! (Maybe bc it hasn't been popular enough to get a LQ-camera torrent) There are only 3 fanfics on AO3 and they're for Frobisher/Sixsmith (one of those guys is played by the gorgeous Ben Whishaw aka Q in Skyfall). I've been making some gifs and graphics for Sonmi-451 (Bae Doona) who is a fabricant in Neo Seoul that leaves her life at a fast-food restaurant of the future. There's the lovely Sonmi/Hae-Joo relationship that I wish was explained more (aka I'm going to have to read the book). I hope my edits will make people want to see the movie and therefore someone will write a beautiful fanfic for my OTP.
If you're interested in seeing it, remember that Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, RANDOM!Hugh Grant, and BAMF!Hugo Weaving are in this movie. Also, the Wachowskis (Matrix trilogy) directed this!!! The cinematography is absolutely brilliant and the orchestral score IS PHENOMENAL. The only downside is it's like 2 hours 45 minutes long (but to me the movie went by pretty fast).
