Dr Who: Season Six is done

Oct 02, 2011 11:18

Before I started watching, I found myself thinking. I knew what would happen if it was bad - I wouldn't tune in to season seven, I don't have the time for another show that treats women like crap. But what would I do if it was good?

Narrative-wise, this episode tied up so many things. It also gave us an Amy who was a throw-back to season five: competent and strong and forward and willing to take on the villain but still inherently good because it really bothered her. But that doesn't erase the utter dross from the rest of the season. It doesn't take back the true awfulness of the pregnancy reveal or the end of The Girl Who Waited. It doesn't even touch on how the entirety of Let's Kill Hitler should be used as a clay pigeon and the important narrative elements simply referred to in other ways.

Depressingly, I suspect I'll watch season seven, because there is still some good in the show, and by the time it airs the hurt of season six will have faded. But I don't expect not to be hurt again. To the writers, women still have to be put in a box, and that box takes many forms, some a lot worse than others. I have always known that the world has that box ready for me (because not even my actual gender identity is enough to break free of it), but Steven Moffat has succeeded in teaching me something else:

No matter how promising something seems, it will hurt me. All I can do is know to expect it.
