For those of you planning/wanting to donate:
Red Cross has a handy page on the subject.
Speaking as a queer folk, and for my tuakana as a queer folk, please do not donate to the Salvation Army. While they do good work for the majority of the population, the measure of a person (or organisation) is never in what they do for the majority, and there have been too many instances of homo- and transphobia from the Salvation Army for me to ever support them.
Those in NZ: blood supply is currently good. We do not need blood donations. Food and water are also in good shape. I believe there may be some accommodation needed in Wellington.
TradeMe has also set up a help listings section.
As a note: Already there are people using email scams pretending to be charity groups seeking donations. Do not donate to anyone via email, even if it's a name you recognise. Instead use Google to search for the charity name and go to their website that way. Never, ever click on a link from an email.
Three days on, I mostly want to sleep forever, cry forever, and mindlessly play computer games now that the power is back. The front page of the newspaper today (still a scant few pages with very little information on the rest of the world) is emblazoned with a photo of a street I recognised immediately from a single pole, confirmed when I saw the street sign next to it. Other than that it's practically unrecognisable.
A slide show of damaged buildings feels even worse. I've always loved the inner city, I know these buildings, they're like old friends, especially the heritage ones. My weekend writing class took place in the Arts Centre, built in the same style as the Cathedral and the Provincial Chambers.
I expect to be having epic mood swings for quite some time. Some stretches of time are still fuzzy and I don't know how long that will last. It's hard to remember what day it is or when things happened. Tonight I'm going to move into the living room, which is further from a door (right now my spot in the dining room is directly next to the sliding doors, I could literally roll out if they were open) but will be a little more comfortable and since we have power back now I won't have to wait for everyone to quiet down so much before I go to bed.
