I am not raiding tonight.
Why am I not raiding tonight?
Well, my laptop had a sudden unexpected motherboard failure. (We think something with the BUS?)
But wait, I have two computers! Why don't I raid on the other one?
Because my desktop is a PPC, not an Intel-based drive.
Why is this a problem?
Because the recent 4.01 WoW patch changed the minimum system requirements for the game so that you now need an Intel Mac.
Yes, yes, I know Intels came in in 2005. But dammit, Macs last more than five years. I buy all of mine second-hand - my laptop is the closest to being new I've ever had, and it's ex-lease. Normally when I get my hands on a computer it's at least two years old already, and I use it for another three or four, so it could be as many as eight years old when I upgrade it.
My tuakana even checked what her MacMini is, but that's a PPC as well - which is what I'd thought, but it was worth double checking.
On that note I also can't play Sims right now. I mean, I could - it does run on my desktop, albeit a bit more sluggishly - but I'd not have my neighbourhood. I'm hoping I'll get to keep the data on my laptop when it gets fixed though if I don't it's not a huge disaster because I don't keep so much on there. There's part of a fic, and there's the original file for I Wish I Was (Crazy) though I can get the one back off YouTube if I have to, and then there's my game data for WoW and Sims 2. WoW all I'd need to do is reinstall my addons. Sims 2 I'd lose the neighbourhood and have to start over - and I just got Jenny out of university! (She moved in with Jack, Ianto and Owen - Tosh had recently gotten married and moved in with the Doctor - and got a job as an Executive Chef. AFAIK neither she or Tosh are preggers yet.) Still I won't be hugely distressed if I do have to start over. It'd be much, much worse losing the data on Fleetwood Mac (desktop) than Annie Morphica (laptop).
Though to be honest.... still not horribly devastating, I don't think. I do have files that are several years old that I'd miss, like RP logs from GreatestJournal before it went down, and quite a few video files and a few unfinished stories, but I guess I'm getting more practical about these things now. Even my rabbit photos are mostly uploaded to photobuckets, though not all of them.
