I don't think TVNZ is even hiding the fact now that they don't have enough tv worth playing. We were stunningly late in getting the first season of The Mentalist, so it didn't actually air that long ago despite the fact that season two is long over. Well, now we've finally gotten season two, and to celebrate the return of 2009's hot series (that they didn't bother airing for many months) they're taking us back, back, to the long-forgotten days of season one. They are showing season two on Monday night, and season one on Tuesday night. *facepalm* Not that I'm complaining, I'll watch the hell out of that shit, but it's not really an action that screams "we have a full and wide variety of programming options available!" You know, I remember a time when there would be as many as three, even four individual shows in an entire week that were decent and entertaining.
Speaking on tv, they're showing the second ep of This Is Not My Life on One tonight. It's a pretty standard soft sci-fi set at some point in the next 50-100 years - basically this guy wakes up with no idea who he is and they're all "oh, you have a sub-dermal hematoma, let's get that fixed up" and when he gets out of surgery he's fine again except that he finds a video of himself talking about how he's not who he thinks he is and he can't trust anyone and uh oh the people are coming for him. Except it's a New Zealand show - the town is called Waimoana and everyone says kia ora (though that's about the only random Maori, sadly) and such. The thing is I've noticed there's this indefinable quality about NZ tv where I can come into a room to make a cup of tea and go, "I have no idea what this show is, but I know it was made here." Something about the camera work and scripting and dialogue... it's not that I recognise actors, because I typically don't, and it's not just the accents, which are so normalised that I hardly notice them. Just something about the feeling of it that screams "this is so fucking Kiwi it's funny."
