Across the Universe

Yep. I watched Across the Universe yesterday. I had time to kill because I was locked out of the house with my aunt. My dad, mom, and my sister were miles away at a fencing tournament. They forgot to give me a key.

Anyways, it was a pretty interesting movie. It was... good, I guess. I mean, it didn't really intrigue me beyond belief. The movie was kind of predictable, because they had the tendency to use the normal, almost cliché movie plots.

Boyfriend goes to war, promises his girlfriend that he'll be back soon, then he dies. Then she's all sad and then she ends up hooking up with some other guy shortly after. You know, the whole movie was like a crossover between Rent, Moulin Rouge, and some teen "set in the '60s" movie. Except, on crack. Some characters were a little unnecessary in terms of plotline, really. Prudence. She was... I don't think they really even needed her in there. I think they stuck her in there because they wanted the song "Dear Prudence" in there, but... I don't know. You know, I expected a lot more deaths to happen in the movie. But no. Only two deaths happened. One death was actually really random. It was this funeral for a little boy. I don't know how the boy's funeral got into the movie, besides for the fact that he died. None of the main characters knew the boy. At all. He apparently died in the war, but... I don't think he even had a name.

I kind of expect fugly icons to be made from this movie. A lot of the scenes would be seriously difficult to color and crop. A lot of the scenes are already overly saturated and quite colorful. I think they could've done better with the filming though. If they wanted to emphasize the artsy feel to the movie, they would've done more things with the camera. I guess on the art part, they depended on the music more than anything else.

And the music wasn't bad. Well, of course not, it's The Beatles! But the singers did it pretty nicely. I could've done without Even Rachel Wood though. The songs weren't as long as a lot of the outbreaks that happen in a lot of other musicals. It's not like there were any La Vie Boheme moments in there. The music was more like Moulin Rouge than Rent though. Crazy scenes. And possibly one too many montages.

I managed to correctly predict Sadie's name. Sexy Sadie. Of course. A lot of the characters names were from the songs. Jude, Lucy, Prudence... Max. Jude was from Liverpool. Hehe. Funny that I managed to catch a lot of the references. My uncle is a big fan of The Beatles, but my mom doesn't even listen to music. My dad has maybe one album of The Beatles, but... it's not really a Beatles album. It's more like a small tribute. Regardless, I still think The Beatles are awesome.

That is, I think the movie had a plot. It was less of an epic drama and more of an artistic film. The music's worth a listen.
