I've known I have thyroid issues for years, but my doctors never really listened to me until the guy I see now, who I'm very happy with for that reason, actually. I have a cyst on my pituitary gland, so when my metabolism changed radically at age 22 or whatever, I knew there was something wrong. But I was so skinny before that, and even though I gained like 20 pounds in a few months, I still looked like a normal sized person, so doctors weren't inclined to believe me that this wasn't my body's normal way. So annoying! But fixed now, yay!
The problem with rheumatoid arthritis vs plain arthritis is that with RA, your body is eating its own connective/soft tissues. It's an auto-immune disease, so basically my immune system is attacking my cartilage and ligaments and even some muscle as if the tissue were a virus or foreign body. There are a ton of meds out there to slow down the progression of it, though. Since my mom has it, she's been telling me what to ask my rheumatologist about when I see her in a few weeks. I would be happy to wake up without something hurting, though :P
