recs: american idol is awesome, your argument is invalid

So, many of you know that I've been watching American Idol for several years now. I watched the first season kind of randomly... I was in college at the time so it was more like I caught some episodes and I watched Kelly win. I saw enough to wonder where the Guy Who Isn't Seacrest was when I started watching it again during grad school, which was (I think) S4. Whichever one was the Bo Bice year. I resisted, but my roommates at the time (lecksee and stellaface were determined to pull me out from under my pop-culture rock. And then I met Jacob while visiting dazifudo in Austin that April, and that sort of forced me to watch it, so I could understand his recaps.

Anyway, blah blah, I've been watching for a while. And I've never really gotten that into it. I enjoy it. But I fast forward through the people I don't like and sometimes I leave the room during the judges' comments because they annoy me one way or another. I would say until this season, I was more of a casual watcher. I admit, I did consider going to Idols Live during the Ace/Daughtry/Bo/Constantine season because, I mean... ACE. But then I didn't, because even I am not that lame. Until, apparently, now.

Fucking Lambert. He ruined my cool. I'm even starting to like his version of 'No Boundaries.' Yeah, I'm doomed. With that in mind, have some recs, and share my fate.

Note: most of these are probably already on other recs lists. But I like to actually say something about why I liked a fic and what it's about when I rec something. And I think I can honestly say that most of you who read my fic or my journal regularly will really love these fics, even knowing next to nothing about American Idol.

kris/adam
(if you need some visual aides or proof or just want to know who the fuck these people are, go visit the kradam bromance guide which details their epic love. Warning: image/gif heavy.)

+ Way Down Inside by wearemany // First, how fucking excited am I to be reading fic by her again?? WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE. Ahem, anyway, yes. This fic! It's a good piece from Kris's point of view and what I liked about it was being able to see Adam and his life through Kris's eyes. I love how Kris sees Adam and his life and his friends as sort of exotic and foreign and fascinating. There's a really nice yearning in this piece that I really love. And of course, amazing writing, which goes without saying, since it's wearemany.
Quote: In the cab, Adam's cheek is turned toward the window, lights and cars passing by in a blurry reflection. They should do a commercial that feels like this, like coming home on a late night, familiar and easy.

+ HATERS TO THE LEFT: (or: How Kris Allen Learned to Embrace His Inner Kanye) by buffyx // This fic is a really good introduction to Kris/Adam and the amazingness thereof. She calls it a friendship fic, but I can totally see there being something more because they are clearly so in love. But mostly it's a story about two very different guys who just GET each other, and I really love it. This is sort of like Kradam: Beginner's Edition for the Uninitiated. Read, learn, and embrace Kris's inner Kanye.
Quote: He likes the idea, though-taking a little part of Adam with him to Arkansas. He can’t wait to go home, even for such a short time, to see all of his family and friends and the places he left behind. But he wants a reminder of everything that’s changed. How he’s changed. Because Adam has changed him, for the better.

+everything all the time by battleofhydaspe // Ngh, I love this fic! Um, basically, Kris comes to stay with Adam while they rehearse or record or something, and yes. It's just like, this little slice of life, and how totally comfortable they are together that they don't really need to Discuss the Important Shit. Which is a nice change from omg-kris-is-married angst.
Quote: Adam puts his earbuds in and walks down the stairs with Jeff Buckley crooning, All full of wine the world before her, was sober with no place to go, in his ear. He kind of feels like getting drunk on cheap wine and chainsmoking a pack of cigarettes. It’s still a couple more days before he can do that.

+ Like Gasoline by linzeestyle// OMG THIS FIC!! Okay first off, it has this hilarious and awesome plot device. They're on tour, and there's this psuedo-sex tape of Adam blowing some guy. And then ALLISON tells Kris he needs to watch it, and of course he does because how can anyone NOT watch an Adam sex tape? And of course he thinks it's hot, because HELLO. Don't get me wrong, this isn't really a light-hearted fic. It's more about navigating a complicated friendship that wants to be more but can't; they mess up and they work it out and it's not a perfect ending, because they don't GET a perfect ending, but it's good, still. Kris can't quit Adam, but he doesn't really want to, either.
Quote: Generally, Kris doesn't have much trouble with sleep; God knows Adam's harassed him about it enough. Tonight, though, Kris finds himself wired, listening to the soft noises of Adam turning and shifting on the pleather lounge sofa, to the way the wheels grind and buzz as they pass over old-paved highway. He drags out his beat-up Zune, texts Katy for a while, until she finally stops responding -- asleep, most likely, it's so much later in Arkansas. It occurs to Kris, idly, that he doesn't know where he is.

+ Pop Goes the World by abusing_sarcasm // Oh, *hearts*. I kind of love this fic! It's not the deepest thing in the world, but it's fun and light-hearted and doesn't take itself too seriously, which is always nice. It's a story about how Adam thinks he's creepy for being fascinated by/in lust with Kris, but then it turns out that Kris is sort of creepy about Adam, too, so they can be creepy together. Plus, it has an amazing opening paragraph that I think really captures Adam SO WELL, and it's from Adam's POV, which is rare in kradam fic, because people are usually much more focused on Kris's long dark tea time of the gay soul.
Quote: It starts off completely innocently, and totally not his fault. Adam realizes that ought to be the first line of his autobiography - if he ever writes one - since it applies to damn near everything he's ever done. Things start off innocently enough, and not at all his fault, and they end with him high as a kite in some hash den in Amsterdam, getting a handjob under the table from some guy he's never met before who doesn't speak a word of English. Adam's accepted it. He's just drawn that way.

+ unless the real dreamer is you by hitchedtoaster // So firstly, you have to ignore the lack of capitalization in this fic. I think it was written as commentfic, which STILL--I would use capitalization, because I always do, because I guess I am an English snob and I am fond of my shift key. WHATEVER. Just ignore that because the fic itself is wonderful. Kris's Idol Journey told in these little vignettes, each of which is just beautiful, all building up this picture of Kris and his character and how complicated he is. And how complicated they are together, but how wonderful, too. Someday, I hope the write decides to start capitalizing things because she's immensely talented and I fear she's being looked over by grammar snobs like myself who can't get past the lower-caseness of everything.
Quote: some nights adam will look at him with eyes younger than he is and say "teach me, kris, teach me something on the guitar," always willing to learn something new. kris carefully fits adam's broad hands - awkward and unsure in this instance - over the frets and teaches him the first things kris himself remembers learning, good riddance and day tripper and a few major chords.

+ All the More for That by jerakeen // WEDDING FIC OMG OMG!!! I love this so fucking much. Honestly, it reminded me a lot of Chicagoland. Not in plot or style, really, but just that it's a futurefic and it's got this kind of tone to it; people reuniting and trying to figure their shit out and just be happy. Allison is getting married, and she decides that she's going to play matchmaker because all she wants for her wedding gift is KRADAM, damnit! I love it. Plus, bonus points for Vegas. (I love Vegas, omg. LOVE IT.) And it's not easy, but it's kind of perfect anyway. Another fic that hit me in all the right places, and made me think, this is something that could happen.
Quote: Kris doesn't mind when life gives him lemons. He is good at making the best of lemons. He just thinks it sucks that when life gave him crème brûlée, he didn't know what to do with it.

+ Events Unnerve Me by yeats // This fic is so incredibly lovely and beautifully written. It's kind of a mood piece, just one long scene, really, but it's such a vivid picture of Adam and Kris's lives in the limbo between Idol and the tour. And that's sort of how their relationship feels in this, too. Like it's in limbo, and they can't move forward because Kris is married and all that, but they can't go back, either. It's kind of about how they might be free of the show, but they'll never really be free of each other. And it's gorgeous, so go read it.
Quote: Adam watches the rebuffed light seep through his dark curtains, and realizes can't remember the exact moment everything started. He's got no idea when his insides first shifted in accordance with Kris' presence. The feeling itself reminds him of his father holding a magnet and a pocket compass at arm's length so Adam could watch North wobble, uncentered. Adam's been reorienting himself to account for the slight warp of Kris' pull for long enough now that it's gotten natural. He thinks about his tattoo, about Kris' face the first time Adam let him touch it. "It doesn't feel any different," Kris had said, dragging his first two fingers across the thin skin. "It feels like it's always been there. Like it started inside and bled out, almost."

+ That Guy by wearemany // I love this fic a really fucking lot. Kris tries to figure out what type of guy exactly IS his type, but of course, we already know the answer to that. It's just a sweet little fic about Kris figuring shit out, and Adam helpfully playing along until he does.
Quote: Kris laughs into his palm, hiding the grin he can't shake. He feels shy and silly and kinda crazy all at once, but Adam just gives him half a hug like he gets that, somehow, like he knows without Kris having to say.

+Borrowed and Blue by miss_begonia // This fic. *hearts* It's not REALLY Kris/Adam, because actually it's a fic about Adam getting married, but there's this whole layer underneath about how they are basically soul mates except for Kris's whole being-straight-and-married thing. NSYNCers will know what I mean when I say that this is a very JoLa fic. They're platonic husbands, and there's this deep longing beneath the entire mood of the piece, not just from Adam but from Kris, too. I like to think that Kris wishes he could be that for Adam. Also, there's a bachelor party and a very Veronica Mars pre-prom beach moment, and it's all very wonderful and lovely and makes me a little sniffly.
Quote: He still looks dazed, and Kris wants to hug him so badly, to tell him this isn’t the end of the world, that he’s got nothing to be afraid of. But he knows this moment belongs to Adam and Quentin in the way that this whole weekend belongs to them. He’s just along for the ride.

+ Did I Find You, Or Did You Find Me? by honey_wheeler // So, like most of these fics, Kris and Adam are in love. This is longish and a bit meandering, but not in a bad way; the first half is Kris's POV and the second is Adam's. It runs throughout Idol and then jumps to a post-tour visit to Arkansas. It's a bit angsty and sad, because the situation is kind of angsty and sad, but it's lovely, too, very satisfying despite the not-quite-happy ending. I like that the writer leaves it up to us to resolve shit and get closure. It's the kind of fic that makes you want to write yourself. It also does a fantastic job of showing two very distinct characters while maintaining continuity, which is very hard and why I hardly ever write different POVs in the same fic. Well worth reading!
Quote: Kris had a weird dream about them once, where he kept tracing them with his fingers and thin lines of ink appeared in the wake of his fingertips, connecting the freckles into lines and shapes and constellations until Adam looked like an abstract painting. Kris woke up feeling weird and guilty, like he’d done something wrong. Those freckles are the first thing the make up crew attacks before every performance and video. As soon as Adam sits down, someone’s got out a sponge and a little round cake of peachy-beige gunk that gets smoothed onto Adam’s face until the freckles are gone. It always makes Kris a little sad, for some reason.

+Take This Sinking Boat by eleanor_lavish // Now, if you don't know who EL is, I just feel sorry for you, because she writes some of the best fic ever, and she's only gotten better since her popslash days. And this fic is just. Fucking gorgeous. The writing is beautiful, vivid, and perfect. It has the kind of plot I love, which is mostly internal conflict and Figuring Shit Out, and she does it beautifully. The characterizations are perfect; Adam is so completely Adam, and Kris is his same sexy, awkward, adorable self. It's a future fic, and a divorce fic, but it's also one of the first divorce fics I've read that feels not only completely believable, but completely right, too. Kris drinks a lot, and tries to get over it, and Adam is the best friend in the world, AND BRAD TELLS KRIS WHAT IS WHAT. Which is amazing and awesome. She somehow manages to make Katy sympathetic, but also not someone we need to feel sorry for or guilty about, which is such a hard balance but so needed in this fandom. This is probably the best kradam I've read so far.
Quote: He watches Adam tug on his jacket and laugh at someone's joke, his shirt slipping a little to reveal a sharp, purple mark on his throat. Kris ducks his head, focuses on the scuffs on his Vans like everyone will be able to read what he's thinking on his face. To the world, Adam has always been a sexual being, but to Kris he's just been Adam - no makeup, hair wet from the shower, fuzzy sleep pants and easy smiles and good advice and strong hands to hold on to.

Adam/Brad
(You might be wondering who Brad is. He's Adam's ex-boyfriend, basically, but there's a good little bradam primer that you should look at. And then go watch all of these videos. Yes, Brad calls himself Cheeks. Deal with it.)

+Never Find Nobody by wearemany // Which is not *exactly* Adam/Brad, but it's pretty damn good anyway. Ex sex. And reflection. And Kris being adorable about gay shit.

+ Not A Tame Lion by ruby_fruit // A cute fic about Adam's secret fuck you to FOX. Brad will be his gay scandal any day.

+ But Now We're Just Going to Go Forward by ohmyra // THIS FIC. I love it. I don't think words can really describe my love for it. Her Brad and Adam are so perfect and awful and wonderful at the same time. And their love is epic. I'm sorry, it just is, and they need to get back together or I will be very sad and have to keep writing about how they are totally Meant To Be. I would like for everyone else to do the same, please, because as you can see, this pairing is woefully deprived.
Quote: A shift, the clouds part, and the Brad that Adam knows, the Brad that dared him to dye his hair purple and then sprayed blue in his own just so they’d stand out together, instead of apart, comes back. It feels like a weight off Adam’s shoulders.

And damnit, I know I've read more or else how would I have gotten so invested in this pairing?? Oh well, for your time, I wrote Wizard Not Included, but you've probably already read that if you've actually made it to the end of this recs list.

Also, there's plenty of porn. For my complete American Idol recs list, go to my delicious.

it's hard out there for a cheeks, curves of your lips rewrite history, recs, *this* is american idol, homie ain't no hollaback boy
