I was having a bit of a difficult night last night (after getting quite a lot done over the weekend), and so went to bed much earlier than usual. Sleep was the right choice, and I went under right away, a true rarity for this insomniac. Then at 1:30AM, my eyes snapped open, and there was a voice in my head saying:
Now, if I were telling this story, I’d start with my arrival, because that was when the triangle solidified, but Raena tells me it should start on her wedding day.
I let him ramble on until he got to more or less the end. Then I made him tell it to me again.
So today I've been writing it all down.
Not the same story, of course. I've turned dreams into stories before, and the key is not to try and recreate it literally. You take one or two or three things from the dream, the things that made it memorable and meaningful, and build the story around them. This one...wow. I wonder if I'll be able to tie all three things together.
What I have learned about my process is that I have a story when I have a voice and a structure. It's nice to have other things like plot and setting and characters, but as far as being able to sit down and actually write something that can be called a story, they are neither necessary or sufficient. So to have both of these things handed to me on a platter like that...well, that's pretty cool.
The working title -- which will never, under any circumstances be the actual title -- is Partners. It'll work for now.
