The 2008 book wrap

Jan 04, 2009 13:39

I read a lot last year. 109 books to be precise (full list including comments, as usual, is at LibraryThing - sort by date read, almost all genre and a lot of it silly, but then I read for entertainment :)) but here are my stand-outs. Rated 4 stars or higher, sorted by author:

With the amount we both read I'd be very surprised if they didn't overlap here and there.

I've read everything Scott Westerfield has written (adult and YA) and loved it all, but most of that was 2006-2007 reading.

The fantasy works I really enjoyed in 2008 were:

Scott Lynch - Lies of Locke Lamora, and Red Seas Under Red Skies

Patrick Rothfuss - The Name of the Wind (as good as Locke Lamora)

Joe Abercrombie's "First Law" series - The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings.

Science Fiction - Neal Stephenson's "Anathem" was the definite highlight for me. Full-on geeky goodness.

Horror/Supernatural - "The Birthing House" by Christopher Ransom and "Duma Key" by Stephen King.

YA - "Starcross" and "Mothstorm" by Philip Reeve (apart from Westerfield, Reeve is my favourite YA author of all time).

Other - "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski and "The Hour I First Believed" by Wally Lamb were great.

This is all from memory and I might have picked out a couple more if I could browse through the shelves. I've already packed up all my books though - my library feels cold and empty without books. But, we do have over 45 'Random House' book boxes packed and ready to move which is a good start. We'll probably need at least another 20 boxes to finish off Kylie's and the boy's books.

We haven't disposed of all of our boxes yet if you need some and don't mind jumping in the car? Not many of them would be book friendly as most of these are computer boxes (we borrowed book/dvd size boxes from my folks) but they're great for big things like saucepans etc. Anyway, all yours if you want them.

As for these, looks like I need to check out Reeve and Rothfuss! You need to start using LT again so that I can keep up with your reading ;)

Thanks for the offer but I've been getting lots of boxes from the bookshop. We've been having a huge sale and are emptying out 4 or 5 boxes of bargain bin stock a day. As soon as a box is empty, I grab it! :)

We're getting boxes from the removalists for everything else, but RH book boxes are the perfect size and strength to cram a library into.
