Yukon notes from Daya

It's been downright busy since I got back--am finally sitting down at computer to add just a few comments. Paddling/floating down the Yukon Ted had on Harold's pants and shirt (that he'd picked out at the Hensold bargain basement giveaway) and Sally was wearing his canoeing hat. It really did feel like he was right there with us. When Julie and I went off to find a place to pee we were hailed by this Australian fellow, well into his 70's I'm thinking, who regaled us with river stories. He'd been floating the Yukon since 1969-spends three months a year going down it. Was pretty sure he'd heard of Harold. In Harold's memory he gave us a laminated map of his favorite sites from Whitehorse to Dawson. He said these sites weren't in books and the places in books were not on his map. When a few folks from our party called to us to come along he was quite brusque with them. Said they were too focused on getting somewhere.

For me a highlight of the trip was, when early one morning as I was walking to the main house to get a shower, a little red fox with a white tipped tail came out of the bush and walked right up to me - the whole time he and I starring into each other's eyes (his were a green/brown).

After we left Whitehorse, we had incredibly beautiful train and ferry rides to find Sam waiting at the dock for us in Haines, AK. He was a more than fine host-cooking us good meals, taking us on hikes (during which we made lots of noises to let the bears know we were in the vicinity), sharing his eagle filled world. It wasn't till we were walking along a hilly residential street in Juneau that a big black bear lumbered across the road in front of us having just indulged in a garbage bin.

Our setting at Muktuk was really perfect for our little group. Harold would have (or did) really enjoyed himself.
