I don't think this episode was building up to Dark Mercury. I think it was just showing a side of Ami's personality that she just has some insecure issues and she over came them. I think this episode like number 4 is kinda a filler until the next episode.

she's just got a little bit of self-esteem issues. she's been an outcast all her life because of her intelligence so it's no wonder she feels this way. she's just met these two and she's probably thinking that the only reason they associate with her is because of their mission.

yeah and it would be reallly messed up if they were just using her

"hey ami-chan, wanna fight to save the world.. i mean we don't really like you, but we kind of got to do this. I mean..your cool and all" lol

The problem was more her lack of self confidence. She was more worried that she wasn't being a good friend. Never having had real friends before, she didn't know how to act. And for someone who's not used to social interaction... all the brains in the world aren't going to help you figure out what to do.
