Tooth and Heartache
House sat beside Wilson’s hospital bed as the oncologist slept, his fingertips ghosting over his lover’s cheekbone. His hand came to rest on the bandaged hand nearest him. It had all started with a toothache. Wilson had gone to the dentist and had returned with the diagnosis of an infection requiring a root canal. Typically he’d put it off, putting his patients ahead of himself. Yesterday on his drive home he’d suffered cardiac arrest, resulting in a car accident; the driver of the other car knew CPR. The diagnosis: Wilson suffered from endocarditis; the infection had spread from his jaw.
Wilson’s heartbeat on the cardiac monitor was music to House’s ears. Fortunately no one else had been injured in the accident and the idiot had survived both cardiac arrest and the collision. He’d suffered a fractured left tibia and a myriad of cuts and bruises, none of them overly serious. As for the endocarditis, he would be fine once the antibiotics took care of the infection. He was covered in bandages and looked pathetic, attracting the nurses, of course, but House kept them away with his snarl. Wilson was his and only he could dote on-uh, monitor-him now.
