*Tries and fails to think of any books or tv shows that feature asexuals*. It's very true that asexuals are very under-represented in the media and there is a lack of awareness about asexuality in general. Your irritation seems entirely justified to me; I don't think anyone should feel pressured to have a romantic relationship if they don't want one.
Well, I remember a statement from the creator that Spongebob was Asexual. And both most recent Hasbro shows (My Little Pony, Transformers Animated) don't come out and say it, but have little to no romance in them, instead focussing on Comradery and Friendship (Hell, it's even the subtitle for the MLP one: Friendship is Magic). It's nothing concrete, but it's something. Yeah, you might go for the 'They're robots/ponies!', but both these shows have very interesting and well-rounded characters, without any romantic sub-plots or coupling.

Hey, don't feel sorry for having a sense of humor. I'm Aseksual, not Afunny. (Even tough that was a lousy joke.)
My family is actually very accepting about it. 'Whatever makes you happy' seems to be the main concensus. I get some funny looks from my Niece, but she always was the 'Conforming to normality' one. We just don't hang out all that much. Problem solved.
The whole 'Instinct thing' is illogical if you ask me. I once had people going 'But Romantic Love is what seperates men from animals!'. Uhm, no. Our higher brainfunctions seperates us from animals. Romantic love is just another extension of wanting to mate, a very primitive, animalistic instinct that A LOT animals have. And don't get me started on the whole 'Without Romantic Love, the world would be dark, grim and cold.' That is NOT true. At the moment, my home has NO romantic love going on. (Single Mom, Teen Brother with no girl/boyfriend. Me.) and it's a warm and welcoming place.
