what I've enjoyed while 'getting into' SGA - is the characters - I love John Sheppard - he is so much more than just a 'hotshot flyboy' but the other characters are rich with details - some blatantly obvious and other layer subtle and almost hidden - McKay is another character I've enjoyed - watching how David Hewlett portrays him - the often obnoxious, over-confident scientist who can be oblivious, weak and cowardly with the best of them - but then you realize that he is NOT completely oblivious to what is happening around him and to those he cares about - and he fails the test when it comes to cowardice in my book - so many times he's stepped right in when he could have turned tail and run, so many times he put himself in harms way because it was the right thing to do - he and Sheppard have had very positive effects on one another - though I'm sure each would be loathe to admit it most of the time
as to Sumner - as you said - right from the outset - his obvious disgust over having Sheppard be a part of this great expedition was hard to miss - so the groundwork is definitely there for a conflict of personalities and authority as well
as for Carson berating Sumner - well - it might not happen when you're expecting it - but I do think the muse is working towards a confrontation there
