“Get out!” Her voice trembles, weighed down by too much emotion. Yet, he knows that she means it.
So he leaves.
Outside the hospital, he doesn’t wait for Eric, even though he’s a right mind to rip him apart. He’s two blocks away before he knows it. His cold fury has turned into a horrible numbness. Bill has never felt more dead.
“She won’t forgive me,” he mutters. The words tumble out of his mouth like they’re trying to escape.
“What could I have done?” he asks the sleeping city.
The city remains silent, indifferent. Regret is all that’s left.

Her slender thighs trembled as he pounded into her the way she liked. But a soft groan was all he’d ever been able to elicit, no matter how dirty the sex was. It was the same now.
“You’re quiet,” he said afterwards, trying not to make it a question. Veronica smiled, a little abashed, and raked her fingers through his sweaty hair.
And didn’t answer.
