Listening to Rachmaninov Vespers while formatting data in an attempt to feel back at IV...
The whole of the Vespers seems to have the feel of movement 12 of the Liturgy of St John Chrysostum - simple, melodic, God loves you and everything is going to be fine. (Singers who haven't done the whole Liturgy may know this as 'To Thee O God'.) I wonder if we would have found more of that in the Liturgy if we'd had a bit more time to work on it and been less stressed and tired on the day. Maybe it's just that the Liturgy isn't as good, but there were moments that should have been awesome and just weren't. Movement 6 with the 5/8 time I still maintain would make an awesome Swingle Singers-style piece if people weren't so scared of it. *sigh*
Ah well, it's a rare performance that's as good as it could have and should have been.
